In recent years bathing in cold water has become an increasingly popular practice. Although the thought of diving willingly into icy cold water may seem unappealing, the practice boasts a surprisingly long history and an ever-growing list of proven health benefits.

The benefits of cold water baths were recognised by ancient civilisations across the globe. In the fourth century BC, famed philosopher Hippocrates documented the use of cold for analgesic and medicinal purposes. In Scandinavia, meanwhile, the Vikings embraced snow and cold water as a way to stimulate circulation and boost alertness.

During the 19th century, cold water immersion gained popularity as a treatment for fevers and as a general tonic for hygiene and physical health. A century later, D.H. Clarke began to explore the correlation between ice baths and faster post-exercise recovery in athletes. This practice gained traction, and ice baths became a mainstay in sports medicine.

When we enter icy water, our sympathetic nervous system - or our fight or flight response - goes into overdrive, struggling to maintain its core temperature. This triggers a cascade of physiological responses. Our blood vessels constrict, slowing the flow of warm blood to the extremities and shunting it instead towards our vital organs. Blood flow to potential injury sites is also reduced, which can be beneficial to athletes as it minimises inflammation and swelling.

Cold water stimulates the release of norepinephrine and epinephrine, which are both hormones. These hormones further elevate heart rate and alertness, mimicking the body’s natural response to stress. This hormonal response is linked to the release of endorphins, which behave as natural painkillers. The release of endorphins can contribute to a sense of well-being after the initial discomfort and shock of being submerged in cold water subsides.

Proponents believe that bathing regularly in cold water can enhance our body’s ability to regulate stress hormones such as cortisol. High cortisol levels have been linked to both depression and anxiety. From a mindfulness perspective, the intense cold of an ice bath demands our full attention, forcing us to focus solely on breathing and bodily sensations, making it a powerful tool for meditation and other related practices.

Wild Swimming in the UK

From the sacred river swims of ancient Hindu culture to Victorian holidays at coastal resorts and inland waterways, wild swimming has enjoyed periods of popularity throughout history. 

Today, wild swimming’s popularity continues to surge, reaching an unprecedented peak in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and going head-to-head with pilates and HIIT for the title of the nation’s fitness favourite. 

Unfortunately, wild swimming in the UK is in danger, with the water quality in natural pools, lakes and the water off-beaches frequently called into question. 

With this in mind, wellness researchers from UK Saunas set out to find the best coastal counties and seaside towns for cold-water wild swimming. 

Understanding Our Methodology

  1. We collated a list of seaside towns.
  2. We then removed any areas where the beaches had been classified as unsafe to swim as per the most recent annual data from the Environment Agency.
  3. Next, we determined the average temperature during spring in the surrounding water of each remaining seaside town using World Sea Temperatures. Seaside towns were then ranked by surrounding water temperature. The lower the temperature, the higher the more points awarded.
  4. Seaside towns were ranked from most relaxing to least relaxing based on a number of factors, including access to services, access to green spaces, crime, mental health and more to create an index. The more relaxing a town, the more points are awarded.
  5. We then combined the total number of points awarded to identify the most relaxing seaside towns for a cold water swim.
